With the bathroom helping to support the loft, the existing columns and beams act as a frame, highlighting the height of the ceiling while shaping the different living areas.

Design Research:

I’m looking into the Asian and Hindu cultures and how they use bathing and exercise rituals as part of the healing process. Along with bathing, I'm looking at some other ways of healing as well. One in particular that I find interesting is the holistic treatments of Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine native to India, and practiced in other parts of the world as a form of alternative medicine.

Concept:

Natural Healing Elements

This space is for people who are temporarily wheelchair bound. They would be able to come to this spa to mentally and physically prepare themselves for the strenuous labor involved in rehabilitation. Along with bathing, this spa would offer oil massages, yoga, skin treatments, and counseling to its patrons.

Designing the bathing space:

Ayurveda believes in 'five great elements' earth, water, fire, air, and space. I used these elements, to aid in the design of the bathing space.

Space Element: My bathing area is raised 3ft off of the ground, allowing it to be separated from the rest of the facility. The floor plan is open using wall partitions to create the bathing area. This helps the space to seem open and as well as inviting. The ceiling consists of glass panels, also creating a more open and serene environment.

Water Element: The pools are 3ft deep to allow its occupants to sit comfortably in the water and still be able to enjoy the space around them.

Earth, Air, Fire Elements: Ayurveda sees bathing as a therapeutic activity, which involves the three doshas (doshas determine a persons temperament), vata (air), pitta (fire), and Kapha (earth). Ayurveda explains that the three doshas govern all mental and physical aspects of the body. With this in mind, I have created three pools, cool for those with an air temperate, warm for those with an earth temperate, and hot for those who have a fire temperate. The different water temperatures enhance physical energy levels and improve mental clarity, while relaxing the mind and balancing emotions.

Since color also helps to stimulate the mind and body, I have chosen colors that represent fire, earth, and air to coincide with the different water rooms and water temperatures.

Another photoshop assignment...... We were given two words that we had to find images for and then manipulate them using techniques that we've learned in class. The images had to represent the words without being to literal and without using text or pictures of people. My words were "weathered" and "disruptive"........ So the above image is of weathered wood with a welding machine. I used the welding machine because the noise that it makes is disruptive. I must say that I did better on this assignment then the previous one :-)

Design Manifesto

We were given the assignment of designing a Manifesto that illustrated what design means to us. We had to come up with a statement that summed up our ideas and then we had to make something that expressed what we were trying to say.

What does design mean to me?

At this point in my life its hard to answer that question. What I like about design is how it is ever changing and how I'm constantly learning something new about myself in the process of discovering what design has to offer. Something that I struggle most with is how to add and subtract color without compromising a design.... So I came up with this Design Manifesto in order to help simplify things for myself.

Have you taken the time to visit the surrounding community of Greensboro. Have you seen the needs in our community. A city is only as strong as the weakest link. The second year Interior Architecture students in the Community By Design Studio at the University of North Carolina Greensboro have researched our community and have seen a few of its needs. One of those is a shelter for the many bus stops around Greensboro, and we are proposing to design a bus shelter to help bring people together and start making a difference by helping those in need. . I noticed how everyone faced the front and didn't look happy

I then looked around and noticed how some areas were dirty and the emergency exit did not look comforting

Growing up and going to school in Columbus, OH, the COTA (Central Ohio Transit Authority) was my main source of transportation, so riding the bus was nothing new for me. Other than finding time to do the assignment, I didn’t think that there would be any difficulties. What I failed to realize was that although both the GTA and COTA are similar, the experience was totally different. Before this assignment I had not traveled on the GTA and should have mapped out where I was going before attempting to venture out into the city. I was traveling with a small group of friends and we decided to take the HEAT bus downtown to the depot and from there find a destination to travel to. Well, we didn’t realize that there was more than one HEAT bus and that they traveled to different locations on, around, and off campus. We took the wrong HEAT bus and ended up wasting 30 minutes riding around campus. Frustrated, embarrassed and hungry, we decided to simply drive down to the bus depot and continue with our original plan. Once at the depot, my previous experience with taking public transportation came back to me and after reading the guides and schedules for where each bus went, we decided to ride to Friendly Shopping Center and back. While on the bus I paid more attention to my surroundings due to the fact that everything was so unfamiliar. Even though I have been to Friendly Shopping Center more times than I can count, I had never traveled there on the bus. I felt a little disoriented and that made me upset. After all I had ridden the bus hundreds of times before but it was in my home town so I knew the people and where I was going, and did it without much thought as to what I was doing. Here I was trying to focus on where the bus was going, the people around me, the different smells, who got on and off, and what stop to get off. Along with all of this, I noticed that people where staring at us. At first I didn’t like it but then I understood why, after all I used to stare at other people the same way. It was almost like they could tell that we didn’t belong on the bus and that it was not a part of our daily routines. That’s when I started to pay more attention to the people on the bus. I remember having a since of pride as well as discomfort when I would ride the bus in Columbus. The pride came from me understanding that the bus was just a means for me to get to school in order to better my life and how I wasn’t ashamed of my circumstances. The discomfort came from the looks and comments of those who looked down their noses at me because I used public transportation. I had already read Chafe’s text this summer while taking an online Social Problems course. But I didn’t relate the assignment to the text until reading it again after the ride. The reading talks about racism and segregation and how horrible it was for those who suffered from those injustices. I related those injustices to those that the poor face every day. A different type of segregation takes place where poor people are looked down at because they have less. I noticed that many of the people on the bus were what we consider to be working class and others were what we describe as poor. I also noticed that no one smiled or even looked content. They looked as if they felt trapped. I felt bad when I got off the bus because perhaps unlike some of them I walked to my CAR and drove home.

First Week Back

I must say that I was a bit nervous to start second year due to the horror stories that I heared from other iarc students. But last week was fun. I know that the first week is always the easiest but I have a good feeling about this year, and I was glad to see all of my class mates from 1st year.
Although I enjoyed the first project, I must say that working with everyone on the final stage of the path project was a bit stressful. I think that we all need to really work on working together. We were unorganized and alot of us got frustrated and just gave up on trying to be apart of what was going on. I really hope that we can pull it together!
Over all I am excited about this year and am looking forward to getting to know everyone better.

Bottle Cap Project (The Pen Basket)

First we began by collecting bottle caps of different sizes and colors, then we used a tack to poke holes in the middle of the cap. We then used needle and thread to sew the caps together using a triangular grid pattern. Once we had enough to connect the caps together to form a circle, we then attached them to a cardboard base using the same sewing method. This gave us or basket shape! Our product can be placed on desks, table tops, counters, etc. it can hold pens, markers, crayons, and any writing utensil. It is an useful and unique object to have.

I took materials used in my time capsule and made a layout sheet for my Process Booklet. Black paper, vellum, and a cream colored paper with black and gray speckles. The white paper represents where a picture or sketch will be placed and the lines on the cream paper is where my handwritten text will go.

A Blog that I think is cool

After visiting many different artists blogs, I must say that my favorite thus far would be Crack Skull Bob. It was neat to see his work and read what inspired him to create them. The characters that he sketched were free and spirited. It was like taking a peak at his world through his sketches. I want people to react to my blog the same way!
